Elizabeth Canuel- VIMS College of William & Mary
Professor of Marine Science

Ph.D. - Marine Sciences

Expertise:
Dr. Canuel is a Professor of Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. She is recognized internationally as a leader in the fields of marine organic geochemistry and chemical oceanography. Noteworthy aspects of her research include examining natural and human-induced changes to the carbon cycle in coastal environments, integrating ecological approaches with organic geochemistry, and, most recently, exploring the development of biofuels from marine algae. Her research uses naturally occurring isotopes and lipid biomarker compounds (chemical fossils that identify different sources of organic matter) to study organic matter cycling at both modern and geologic timescales. She is currently involved in a project evaluating the potential application of diverse wild algal communities for the combined benefit of removal of nutrients from eutrophied waters and as a feedstock for biofuels.
