Expertise:
Dr. Durand has expertise in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, alternative energy, analysis of thermal systems, system simulation and optimization, energy use in buildings, and electric vehicles and is currently involved in a variety of projects at the UVa involved with improving the performance of wind turbine systems, and sustainable transportation. Dr. Durand is the Co-Director of the Jefferson Wind Energy Institute, which undertakes research in improving current wind technologies, and in investigating next generation wind systems. Dr. Durand also directs the RideForward program which involves a group of students that converts a car to electric drive every year, and installs a photovoltaic array to offset the car's electrical usage.
