Expertise:
Dr. Atkinson is a recognized expert on the descriptive dynamics of the coastal ocean. This includes coastal currents, waves, temperatures, extreme events and other aspects of the ocean environment. He has been an advisor to MMS on offshore oil and gas risk issues for nearly 30 years and has funded projects relevant to that topic. This experience is proving to be directly applicable to offshore wind power. He initiated an American Meteorological Society working group on the needs of the offshore wind industry that will require new research. This group will work with the AWEA offshore wind R&D committee. He has had recent funding on sand scouring around cables in wind farms and analysis of the wind resource. He and his colleagues have developed a data base of most if not all offshore environmental data. This data is clean and well organized and ideal for research and engineering studies.
