Specialist in freshwater and marine phytoplankton ecology, distribution, and composition; with extensive research experience in phytoplankton studies in the Atlantic coastal waters of the United States, Chesapeake Bay, plus rivers and lakes in Virginia. He has over 160 journal publications regarding phytoplankton dynamics in these various habitats, with additional studies concerning potentially harmful and bloom producing phytoplankton species within Virginia waters and the Chesapeake Bay.
